While McAvoy never denied rumors that he was under consideration for the part, he did seem hesitant to accept it several months ago, saying "I love Star Trek,... but my only gripe with Star Trek was that sometimes they fell into racial stereotypes, and with Scotty more than any other, because he really was just a Scotsman and nothing else. . . There was nothing else behind his character really. I hope they don't do that with him" in the new movie. With the official confirmation, however, it seems that the Scotty role must have been fleshed out sufficiently to make the 28-year-old actor comfortable with the role. Fans are sure to be delighted with the choice, as it will mark the first time a true Scottsman has taken on the role. The original Scotty, James Doohan, was Canadian. But, he was a master of false accents, and helped design the Klingon language. |
