Braga: Has Some Regrets about 'Enterprise' PDF Print E-mail

Brannon_Braga.jpgFormer Star Trek franchise runner Brannon Braga admitted at a Los Vegas convention that the final hour of Star Trek: Enterprise was a mistake. "I do have some regrets about that final episode," he said. "It didn't quite creatively align with the rest of the season. The final episode was very controversial and I do have some regrets about it . . . It had some great stuff in it, and it was a cool concept, but it was languid. I don't know if it fully delivered and it really pissed off the cast."

He said that the intention of the epsodes, titled "These are the Voyages," was supposed to be...

a sort of Star Trek "valentine" for the fans. In it, Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis (as Riker and Troi) re-enacted the final days of the Enterprise on a Next Generation holodeck. Braga knew the idea was a bold one, but with it being the final episode, he also knew the net work would let them get away with it. But, instead of the treat he hoped for, many fans were upset with the ending.

As far as killing off Trip Tucker (Connor Trinneer), Braga admitted that "Trip was always my favorite character on the show and I wanted to kill him. I can't give you a coherent response. We wanted to do something that had emotional impact and had consequences, which is something we were never allowed to do."

After slow ratings, showrunner Manny Coto was brought in during the fourth season. While fans were pleased with his work, it was too little too late with the network (UPN) and they pulled the plug on the series. Braga wondered what might have happened if Coto had been there "from the beginning. When I was seeing what Manny was doing, it was like, 'You know what? Maybe this should have been the show form the start.'"
