'Trek XI' Writers Hope Shatner Will Appear in Film PDF Print E-mail
William Shatner In an MTV interview, Star Trek XI writers denied all the fuss and rumor about shutting William Shatner out of the film. The gossip has been running rampant about this film, (and really, with no "official" information what else do you expect??) and recent rumors indicated that Shatner was miffed at being excluded, especially considering that Leonard Nimoy was scheduled to appear briefly in the film...

But, writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci said nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, Orci indicated that they had been "hoping to include him in the shoot because we have nothing but reverence and awe for the man."

Both writers were happy to work on a film which was not only relevant to the past, but also relevant to events going on in the world today. Kurtzman called Star Trek Gene Roddenberry's answer to the Cold War; "a fantasy of finding a way for everyone to come together -- and that has managed to stick through all the versions of Star Trek. The world's changed, but it also hasn't. We live in a world where it's about ultra-paranoia of others, and that is as it was back when Roddenberry invented Trek. In a way, it's more timely now than ever to be doing this."

As far as finding a new actor to fill those great big James T. Kirk shoes, the duo agreed that it was quite a challenge. Orci said it was "tough because so many of the people that portrayed the characters in Star Trek were distinctive. A lot of the writing created Shakespearean-type characters, such that you could imagine it going both ways. You could imagine it being open to interpretation, or you can imagine it being really faithful. We're trying to figure out how to do that."
