The USS Reliant NCC-1864 was a Miranda Class vessel under the command of Captain Clark Terrell

The Reliant was ordered to assist Dr Carol Marcus and the Project Genesis team to search for a lifeless planet for the Genesis project to successfully start stage three of it's tests and came upon Ceti Alpha VI where Reliant scanned the planet for any signs of life but before Reliant could confirm it be to a lifeless planet the ship's dynoscanner's picked up minor energy flux on the planet and Captain Terrell and his first officer Pavel Chekov beamed down to see if it could be transplanted making Ceti Alpha VI a lifeless planet and fit for Genesis tests.

The landing party instead encountered Khan Noonien Singh who with his fellow exiles captured the two Starfleet officers informing them Ceti Alpha VI was actually Ceti Alpha V before implanting Ceti Eels into the heads of the two officers before taking over the Reliant and marooning all crewmembers on Ceti Alpha V with the exception of Captain Terrell and Pavel Chekov.
Chekov under the influence of the Eels then informed Dr Marcus that Ceti Alpha VI checked out and the Reliant was on it's way to Regula 1 to take all Genesis materials on the orders of Admiral James T Kirk.

Alerted by Dr Marcus, the USS Enterprise raced to Regular One but was beaten by Khan who tried to take the Genesis device from the Regula One crew before Khan headed out and intercepted the Enterprise and opened fire on the ship severely damaged the Enterprise's engineering section before Admiral Kirk counter attacked damaging the ship's photo torpedo control and the warp drive leaving both ships to withdraw and Khan successfully took the Genesis device when Captain Terrell and Pavel Chekov assisted Kirk in discovering the surviving members of the Genesis team and the Genesis device allowing Khan to beam it to the Reliant.

The Reliant and the Enterprise clashed in the Mutara Nebula with the Enterprise successfully crippling the ship before not before Khan damaged Enterprise's reactor causing the ship to lose it's warp drive.
Khan then set the Genesis device off hoping to destroy the Enterprise too but Captain Spock sacrificed himself to get the reactor back online and the Enterprise warped out of the area before the Genesis device exploded
